The 1980s proved itself to be a decade of revolutionary changes on the Irish music scene. This era brought us many new types of music, fashion and local radio stations, however, it was also an era that brought us “Purple Haze”, the South East based Hard Rock outfit. Once considered as valid contenders for the world of Hard Rock, the band have reformed to return,after a 25 year break. Purple Haze had developed quite a reputation for themselves during the 1980’s, through their energetic and entertaining live performances, and it is certain that if they had been based on the other side of the Atlantic, the line up would have progressed on to bigger and greater things. The high potential of Purple Haze, was realised by likes of Jon Bon Jovi and the late Robin Crosby of Ratt, when both reviewed the bands’ only single “Hear it on the Radio” in the renowned Rock magazine “Kerrang”. In the legendary publication, Jon Bon Jovi, is quoted as saying “This is a good band, a good song …. It’s got an anthemic feel”, with Robin Crosby also commenting, “that with the right producer this could be rather impressive…… A very respectable indie effort”. “Hear it on the Radio”, also made it as Larry Gogan’s single of the week on 2FM upon its release, gained considerable airplay on the national and regional radio stations around the country and even acquired Playlist Status as far away as “Radio Rio” in Brazil. This exposure was complimented by positive press coverage in the Irish, UK, and South American media. Certainly in 1985 the band were creating quite stir in the music scene, and started attracting quiet a lot of interest from various record companies in Europe and the U.S., including “Heavy Metal America” and “FM Records”. Purple Haze were always renowned for their lively and engaging performances, and with this in mind, they were considered in such a high regard as a live act, that they shared the same stages with Mamas Boys, Phil Lynott, Auto de Fe, Driveshaft and Cry Before Dawn to name a few. 1986 was the last time they performed together, and with the band busy again in rehearsals over the last few months, they are currently working on some new original material, with the objective of returning to the recording studios in the near future. Purple Haze are now a five piece outfit. The line up comprises of John Fleming (Guitars), Ray Mullins (Drums), Steve Roche (Bass), Stephen O’Hanlon (Vocals) and Michael Fleming (Guitars).
